Cannabis Storage 101: How to Keep Your Cannabis Fresh

Cannabis Storage 101

You picked out quality flower — now the goal is keeping it that way. Cannabis is a natural product, and like coffee beans or fresh herbs, it responds to its environment. Stored well, it maintains its quality for months. Stored poorly, it dries out, loses its aroma, and burns harsh. The good news: proper storage is simple once you know what you're protecting against.

Here's everything you need to know, straight from our education series.

The Four Factors That Affect Stored Cannabis

Four factors affect stored cannabis: air, light, heat, and humidity.

Oxygen exposure degrades cannabinoids over time, and UV light accelerates that breakdown — the same way sunlight fades furniture. Heat dries flower out, and humidity is a balancing act: too dry and the flower turns brittle and harsh, too damp and you risk mold.

The recommended storage environment is cool, dark, and 55–62% relative humidity. That number sounds technical, but in practice it's easy to hit: an airtight glass container kept out of direct light covers most of it.

Two Common Storage Mistakes to Avoid

Two habits do more damage than people realize:

The fridge. It seems logical — cool and dark, right? But temperature and humidity fluctuate every time the door opens, creating condensation inside your container. Cold also makes trichomes (the delicate, resin-rich parts of the flower) brittle, so they break off before you ever get to enjoy them.

Plastic bags. Thin plastic carries a static charge that pulls trichomes right off dried flower, and it offers essentially no protection from air or light. A baggie is fine for the drive home — not for the shelf.

Worth noting: legal cannabis packaging is actually designed for storage, so keeping flower in its original container is a fine start. For anything longer-term, a sealed glass container with a two-way humidity pack maintains conditions much longer.

The Simple Setup That Covers Everything

The Simple Setup That Covers Everything

You don't need specialized equipment to master this. The winning formula:

  • An airtight glass jar — glass doesn't hold static, doesn't breathe, and seals out air.
  • A cool, dark spot — a cupboard or drawer away from windows, radiators, and electronics.
  • A two-way humidity pack — drops into the jar and automatically keeps humidity in the ideal range.
  • The original packaging as backup — it's built for the job if you don't have a jar handy.

One more essential: whatever container you use, keep it clearly labelled, out of reach, and away from children and pets. Child-resistant storage isn't just good practice — it's part of consuming responsibly.

What About Edibles and Concentrates?

Flower gets most of the attention, but a couple of quick rules for the rest of your stash: edibles generally keep best according to their package directions — usually a cool, dry spot. Concentrates prefer cool, dark storage to hold their texture. When in doubt, the original packaging and a dark cupboard rarely steer you wrong.

Master the Art of Storage

Properly stored cannabis maintains its quality for months — and once your setup is in place, it takes zero ongoing effort. A glass jar, a dark cupboard, and a humidity pack are all that stand between you and consistently fresh sessions.

Summer in Niagara hits different. The patios are packed, the Falls are misting, and nobody wants to be huddled around a lighter in 30-degree heat. If there's one season where cannabis drinks and edibles shine, it's this one — and our beverage fridge and edibles shelf are stocked for it. Whether you're a local planning a backyard hang or a visitor building the perfect Niagara day, here's why smoke-free options deserve a spot in your summer rotation. Why Drinks & Edibles Win in the Summer There's something about a cold THC beverage on a hot day that just makes sense. No smoke, no smell, no gear to carry — just crack a can and enjoy. Drinks are also easier to dose in social settings: most infused beverages on our menu land right at 10 mg THC per can, so you can pace yourself the same way you would with any summer drink. They're also discreet and travel-friendly for a bonfire or a night in — just remember Ontario's public consumption rules (our FAQ covers the basics, and our staff are always happy to walk you through them). What's Chilling in the Honeypot Fridge Our beverage cooler rotates all season, but right now the lineup reads like a summer patio menu: Lemonades & punches — Summer in a can. Ray's Lemonade Strawberry Lemonade and Summit Pink Lemonade are exactly what a July afternoon calls for, and Punchy's Fruit Punch tastes like a throwback to summer camp — with a twist. Sparkling sodas — Crisp and sessionable. Astrolab's Interstellar Rocket Lime Live Rosin Soda brings real live rosin flavour, while XMG Zero Orange Soda keeps it zero sugar for anyone watching the sweet stuff. Tropical vibes — Closest thing to a beach vacation in a can: Cannabis Cartel's Sparkling Coconut Water with Pineapple and Green Monké Tropical Citrus , a balanced 10 mg THC / 20 mg CBD sipper for a mellower ride. Lighter options — Frootyhooty's Poppin Peach Splash Zero is an easy-drinking peach sparkler, and Collective Project's CBG Raspberry & Lime Botanical Water is perfect when you want refreshment with a lighter touch. Edibles Built for Summer Days Gummies remain the MVP of warm-weather edibles — they hold up far better in a beach bag than chocolate (trust us, an OLLI brownie is delicious, but it does not love a July afternoon in a hot car). Our soft chews shelf reads like a fruit stand right now: SOURZ by Spinach Pink Lemonade and Blue Raspberry Watermelon for classic sour-candy energy, HighXotic's TenTen Caribbean Chill live rosin gummy for tropical flavour, and Pearls Peach Mango CBD chews for a THC-free wind-down. Prefer something gentler? Wyld's Real Fruit Strawberry Gummies at 20:1 CBD:THC are a fan favourite from the Hive Jive crowd. New to edibles? The golden rule is start low and go slow. Edibles can take 30 minutes to 2 hours to kick in, so give your first dose time to work before reaching for another. Make It a Niagara Day Visiting the Falls this summer? Plenty of travellers make Honeypot a stop on their itinerary — we're a quick trip from Clifton Hill, Fallsview, and most major hotels at 6832 Drummond Rd, Unit 1.
