Four factors affect stored cannabis: air, light, heat, and humidity.

Oxygen exposure degrades cannabinoids over time, and UV light accelerates that breakdown — the same way sunlight fades furniture. Heat dries flower out, and humidity is a balancing act: too dry and the flower turns brittle and harsh, too damp and you risk mold.

The recommended storage environment is cool, dark, and 55–62% relative humidity. That number sounds technical, but in practice it's easy to hit: an airtight glass container kept out of direct light covers most of it.

Two Common Storage Mistakes to Avoid

Two habits do more damage than people realize:

The fridge. It seems logical — cool and dark, right? But temperature and humidity fluctuate every time the door opens, creating condensation inside your container. Cold also makes trichomes (the delicate, resin-rich parts of the flower) brittle, so they break off before you ever get to enjoy them.

Plastic bags. Thin plastic carries a static charge that pulls trichomes right off dried flower, and it offers essentially no protection from air or light. A baggie is fine for the drive home — not for the shelf.

Worth noting: legal cannabis packaging is actually designed for storage, so keeping flower in its original container is a fine start. For anything longer-term, a sealed glass container with a two-way humidity pack maintains conditions much longer.

The Simple Setup That Covers Everything

That's by design: federal rules keep packaging standardized so the label does the talking. The good news? Once you know what five or six things mean, you can size up any product on our live menu in seconds. Here's your decoder ring.

THC vs. Total THC (Yes, They're Different)

Most labels show two sets of numbers: THC and Total THC (same for CBD). The first is what's active right now; the second is what you'll actually get once heat converts the raw THCA in the product. Total THC is the number that matters for smoked or vaped products — that's the one we quote on our menu.

Percentages vs. Milligrams

Flower, pre-rolls, and vapes are labelled in percentages — dried flower typically lands anywhere from the mid-teens to the low 30s, while vape carts run far higher (70–98%) because they're concentrated extract — we broke down why in our extracts guide .

Edibles and drinks are labelled in milligrams, and here's the big one: Health Canada caps edibles at 10 mg THC per package. The Excise Stamp: Your Proof It's Legal

That coloured stamp sealing the package is the federal excise stamp — Ontario's is red. It means the product came from a licensed producer, was tested to federal standards, and taxes were paid. A lot, as it turns out. The extraction method shapes everything: flavour, potency, price, and how close the experience stays to the original plant. Here's the breakdown, Honeypot style.

First, What "Live" Means

When you see "live" on a label, it means the extract was made from fresh-frozen cannabis — plants frozen immediately at harvest instead of being dried and cured. Freezing locks in the terpenes (the aromatic compounds we covered in our Terpenes 101 guide ) that would otherwise evaporate during drying. The result: extracts that taste like the living plant, not just the strain name on the box.

Live Resin: Flavour With Muscle
