Live Resin vs. Live Rosin vs. Distillate: What's Actually in Your Vape?
Walk down our vape aisle or peek into the concentrates case and you'll see the same words over and over: live resin, live rosin, liquid diamonds, distillate, full spectrum. They all look like golden goo in a cart or a jar — so what's actually the difference?
A lot, as it turns out. The extraction method shapes everything: flavour, potency, price, and how close the experience stays to the original plant. Here's the breakdown, Honeypot style.
First, What "Live" Means
When you see "live" on a label, it means the extract was made from
fresh-frozen cannabis — plants frozen immediately at harvest instead of being dried and cured. Freezing locks in the terpenes (the aromatic compounds we covered in our
Terpenes 101 guide) that would otherwise evaporate during drying. The result: extracts that taste like the living plant, not just the strain name on the box.
Live Resin: Flavour With Muscle
Live resin starts with that fresh-frozen plant and uses solvents (typically butane or propane, fully purged afterward) to pull out cannabinoids and terpenes together. You get high potency and a loud, strain-true flavour.
On our shelf, that's carts like
Carmel's Animal Face Pure Live Resin and
Tribal's Cuban Linx Live Resin — both known for tasting like the actual strain rather than an added flavour. Prefer dabs?
1964's Comatose FSE Resin (FSE = full spectrum extract) delivers the same idea in a jar.
Choose live resin if: you want big flavour and strain character without paying top-shelf rosin prices.
Live Rosin: The Solventless Top Shelf
Live rosin gets to a similar place with zero solvents. Fresh-frozen plants are washed in ice water to collect trichomes (ice water hash), then pressed with nothing but heat and gentle pressure. It's the connoisseur's pick — the cleanest expression of the plant, and usually the priciest.
Honeypot's own product page for Cross Border Concentrates' Live Rosin Budder describes the process perfectly: fresh-frozen cannabis, extracted with ice water and mechanical pressure, no solvents or additives. For dabbers chasing something special, Sauce Rosin Labs' Seasonal Gas Pack is small-batch rosin at its finest, and HighXotic's Dank Schrader Live Hash Rosin pen puts it in an all-in-one vape.
Fun fact: rosin has escaped the dab rig entirely — you'll now find it in
Astrolab's live rosin sodas in our fridge and
HighXotic's live rosin gummies on our edibles shelf.
Choose live rosin if: you want solventless purity and maximum flavour, and you're willing to pay for craft.
Distillate: The Potency Workhorse
Distillate takes the opposite approach: cannabis oil is refined until nearly everything except THC is stripped away, landing at 90%+ purity. Terpenes are removed in the process, so distillate carts are usually re-flavoured — either with cannabis-derived terpenes or botanical ones (that's how you get flavours like
Back Forty's Peach Lemonade or
XPLOR's Nana's Jam).
Then there's
liquid diamonds — a newer twist where pure crystalline THCA ("diamonds") is melted into the oil for a smooth, ultra-potent hit. That's the tech behind
Spinach's Blueberry Dynamite Liquid Diamonds and
Endgame's Hard Hitters Platinum Punch.
Choose distillate if: you want maximum potency, consistent effects, dessert-and-fruit flavours, and the friendliest price per gram.
The Old-School Corner
Extracts didn't start with vape carts. Our
hash shelf keeps tradition alive — from
MTL's Wes' Coast Kush Hash to
HASHCO's Blonde Hash — and classic
shatter still has a loyal following. If you're dab-curious, we stock rigs, bangers, and tools on the
smoke shop side too — one stop, everything you need.
