How to Read a Cannabis Label in Ontario

Legal cannabis packaging in Canada is famously... plain. No flashy artwork, no wild claims — just a wall of numbers, symbols, and fine print. That's by design: federal rules keep packaging standardized so the label does the talking. The good news? Once you know what five or six things mean, you can size up any product on our live menu in seconds. Here's your decoder ring.

THC vs. Total THC (Yes, They're Different)

Most labels show two sets of numbers: THC and Total THC (same for CBD). The first is what's active right now; the second is what you'll actually get once heat converts the raw THCA in the product. Total THC is the number that matters for smoked or vaped products — that's the one we quote on our menu.

Percentages vs. Milligrams

Flower, pre-rolls, and vapes are labelled in percentages — dried flower typically lands anywhere from the mid-teens to the low 30s, while vape carts run far higher (70–98%) because they're concentrated extract — we broke down why in our extracts guide.

Edibles and drinks are labelled in milligrams, and here's the big one: Health Canada caps edibles at 10 mg THC per package. Check whether that's one piece or several — SOURZ by Spinach packs split it into 5 gummies of 2 mg each (great for pacing), while a HighXotic TenTen gummy puts the full 10 mg in one piece.

Ratios: When Two Cannabinoids Share the Label

Plenty of products list THC and CBD, and the ratio tells you a lot about the ride. Green Monké's Tropical Citrus soda pairs 10 mg THC with 20 mg CBD for a softer landing, Blissed's Breathe cart runs 2:1 CBD-forward, and WholeHemp's CBD flower flips the script entirely at 20.4% CBD and under 1% THC. Generally: more CBD relative to THC = gentler, clearer experience.

Why the Same Strain Shows Different Numbers

Here's one that confuses everyone: right now on our shelf, Spinach GMO Cookies 3.5g tests at 32.1% THC while the 28g bag of the exact same strain shows 31.7%. Neither label is wrong — cannabis is a plant, and every harvest lot tests a little differently. The lot number on your package ties it to that specific batch's lab results. It's also why chasing a strain by its THC number alone is a losing game (terpenes matter more — see our Terpenes 101 guide).

The Packaged-On Date: Your Freshness Radar

Every label carries a packaged-on date. For flower and pre-rolls, fresher generally means better — terpenes fade over time even in sealed packaging. There's no hard expiry rule, but if you're choosing between two jars, the date is a legitimate tiebreaker. (Once it's home, storage matters just as much — cool, dark, airtight.)

The Excise Stamp: Your Proof It's Legal

That coloured stamp sealing the package is the federal excise stamp — Ontario's is red. It means the product came from a licensed producer, was tested to federal standards, and taxes were paid. No stamp, or a stamp from another province on a local shelf, is a red flag. Every product at Honeypot carries one — it's the easiest way to tell a legal store from the grey market.

The Rest of the Fine Print

The red THC symbol — the standardized octagon that must appear on anything containing THC. Health warnings — federally mandated and rotating; every brand carries them. Producer name — sometimes different from the brand you know (brands are often product lines of larger licensed producers). Net weight — what you're actually paying for.

Put It Into Practice

Next time you're in, grab any package and run the checklist: Total THC, mg or %, ratio, lot, date, stamp. Do it twice and it becomes automatic. Nugz Grind - Lemon Linx 7g Milled Flower This week $27.95. Regular $31.95. Lemon Linx is a sativa from Nugz Grind, a Quebec producer, and it comes already milled. Nugz blends two of their own strains, Early Lemon Berry and Cuban Linx, then mills the whole flower and seals it in a can with a scoop. The can holds 7 g at 25% THC and 0% CBD. If you roll your own or pack bowls, this skips the grinder and the mess. The label describes the aroma as zesty citrus with a savoury spice behind it. See more dried flower . Redecan - Gems 5:5 Blend 15 caps This week $14.00. Regular $18.00. Gems are soft gel capsules from Redecan, one of the larger Ontario producers, and the cannabis in them is grown in Niagara. Each capsule contains 5 mg THC and 5 mg CBD, which puts them in the balanced category rather than THC-forward. There are 15 in the bottle. The oil is CO2-extracted, and because every capsule is the same dose, this is the most predictable format we carry for anyone who wants to measure exactly what they are taking. No smoke, no smell, nothing to prepare. See more capsules . Truro - Pinners Pre-Roll 10x0.35g This week $20.95. Regular $24.50. Pinners come from Truro Cannabis in Nova Scotia. You get ten small pre-rolls at 0.35 g each, which is a short session size rather than a full joint. Truro rolls them from milled whole flower, not trim or shake, and the flower is indoor-grown, hang-dried, hand-trimmed and cured for 28 days before it is rolled. This batch tests at 29.2% THC and 0% CBD. Pinners are a rotating indica blend, so the strain mix changes from batch to batch. We have a limited number of packs, so this one is while supplies last.
